Some good news for consignors to the 2009 NCHA Futurity Sales comes as a result of the Rock Creek Dispersal Sale on Friday, October 16.
Western Bloodstock, which conducts all NCHA sales in Fort Worth, announced this week that entries for the NCHA Futurity Sales would continue to be accepted for an extended time due to the overlapping schedule created by the Rock Creek Ranch Dispersal (also produced by Western Bloodstock).
More good news comes from Western Bloodstock director Milt Bradford, who reports that NCHA Futurity Sale consignments are down significantly from 2008.
“The supply and demand factor is going to kick in and those good prospects and show horses are going to sell well,” Bradford said. “As long as people are cutting, they need to have prospects.”
“I actually look for the Futurity Sales average to be up from 2008,” added Jim Ware, also a Western Bloodstock director. “A catalog of fewer horses should have a positive impact on the market. I also predict that the Rock Creek Sale is going to boost people’s confidence because we’re going to see all categories of horses sell well.”
To take advantage of the NCHA Futurity Sales extension, call (817) 594-9210 or go to westernbloodstock.com.

Santa Anita will host the Breeders’ Cup World Championships again this year with the 14 races held over two days and total purses of $25.5 million up for grabs. There have been a few changes this year to allow for an all Breeders’ Cup Pick Six on both days, with the Marathon moving to Friday because of this and also increasing in distance to 1 3/4 miles. Friday will have six races starting with the Marathon followed by the five distaff divisions, with the feature race being the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic (formerly the Breeders’ Cup Distaff) worth $2 million. Saturday will have eight races, with the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at a mile and a quarter still the feature and final race pf the day. Pre-entries will be released on October 29 and I will get them online as soon as possible.
Television coverage for the Breeders’ Cup will be on ESPN and ESPN2 with the schedule so far being:
- Friday, November 6, 3:30-7:00 ET on ESPN2
- Saturday, November 7, 1:30-7:00 ET on ESPN
Check here for the latest TV schedule including preps and preview shows.
