Early Sunday morning in Ocala … Boo, my kitty …

Scenes from an Ocala Thoroughbred Farm.

Ocala and Marion County are full of beautiful, rolling horse farms … these scenes from an Ocala Thoroughbred farm are why I love living here.

Horse breeders, trainers, jockies, artisans, and retailers feed the Florida horse industry and can be seen almost anywhere you go, in and around Ocala. LIKE!!

A Visit to an Ocala Horse Farm Full of Potential Kentucky Derby Winners.

Fancy Stockings

Yesterday I filmed part of a visit to an Ocala horse farm full of potential Kentucky Derby winners. Ocala, and the surrounding Marion County area, is home to approximately 75% (450 +/-) of the Thoroughbred farms and training facilities in Florida. I’m seeing many photo and video opportunities. ;-)

Ocala is also a ‘breeding ground’ for equine services and vendors, such as veterinarians, horse transportation companies, feed and tack stores, horse trailer sales, farriers, etc., and is the home of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association.

The Paddock Room in Ocala Will Add Equestrian Elegance to Your Horse Farm or Your Barn!

A fixture in Ocala for 40 years or so, The Paddock Room is a retail store specializing in items “depicting the horse, fox and dog in equestrian settings.” Here are Google map directions for you. I suspect there are many items from The Paddock Room in many Ocala horse farms.

Below are a few photos of The Paddock Room which I took from outside the store yesterday (I didn’t get there until after closing time).

The Paddock Room address and phone number:

226 East Silver Springs Boulevard
Ocala, FL 34470-5832

David has been photographing the American West for over twenty years. You can read more about him here.

He has photographed horse farms, cattle ranches, roundups… you name it.

Tas-T-O Donuts in Ocala … Keeping Cops and Horse People Happy Since 1969.

The memory of fresh, delicious Tas-T-O Donuts here in Ocala stuck with me all the way from Ocala, back to Hawaii, then to North Carolina, and back to Ocala. While living in Ocala several years ago, I would stop for fresh donuts after working out at a now-gone gym up the road from Tas-T-O. Always fresh and delicious, I learned to be patient with those in line ahead of me, and that once the day’s fresh donuts were gone, Tas-T-O’s closed ’til the next morning.

Yesterday I drove by after they closed (intentionally!) so I could check their hours of operation. Tas-T-O Donuts will be delicious to take on my early morning drives to take pictures of the beautiful horses and horse farms here in Ocala. Works for me!

Support Tas-T-O Donuts on Facebook too! They’ve been accumulating devoted fans in Ocala since 1969.

Rolling Pastures Full of Thoroughbreds in Ocala Beautify the Horse Farm Properties.

The rolling pastures full of Thoroughbreds in and around Ocala (Marion County) not only beautify the horse farm properties, they make it hard for me to get anywhere on time. During the summer months, there are new foals by their mothers’ sides, weanlings, and yearlings almost anywhere you go in Ocala. LIKE!

Florida is home to approximately 600 Thoroughbred farms and training centers, with over 75% of these farms and training centers being located in the Ocala, Marion County area ~ providing a major economic impact.

The horse farms and pastures full of Thoroughbreds in Ocala provide a major visual impact as well.

The Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum Collection. Going, going…..

Breaks my heart that the Roy Rogers & Dale Evans Museum is dispersing (and I can’t have one of Dale or Roy’s rhinestone and fringe Western shirts). Read the New York Times article about the auction and today’s preview at Christie’s at Rockefeller Center, Meeting Again at the Auction House. You may view the Christie’s eCatalog here.

“Wild West kitsch will take over Christie’s plush quarters at Rockefeller Center at noon on Friday. A preview opens for the last of this year’s five major auctions dispersing the contents of the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Museum in Branson, Mo.”

Horses and Horse Farms In Ocala Surrounded by Marion County 'Old Florida' Magic.

Horses and horse farms aren’t all you will see in Ocala. Historic Downtown Ocala is home to charming stores like Hannah’s and Jezebels, coffee shops like Starbucks, and restaurants. The Marion County Library is a sight to see, convenient to the downtown area, and not without horses as adornments. I love that Ocala is still ‘Old Florida’ … thank goodness!

Speaking of horse farms, 560 acres were just purchased in Marion County by Jedi A Polo and Jedi B Polo owner Erich Koch, of Wellington.

Florida Trend published a great Community Portrait of Ocala and Marion County here.
